Cars and Seals: Unscrewing the Roof Antenna
Question: Can a fixed car roof antenna be unscrewed when using a car cover? I have a short, 40cm, fixed roof antenna on my car and want to use a car cover. It seems that I need to unscrew from the base fixed to the roof. Is this ok to do? Should I fit a plug in the screw base with something to prevent corrosion? I also checked on the flex seal reviews and I might just be using a rubber sealant isntead.
Answer: If you are concerned about corrosion during long term storage, lube the threads with WD40 before putting the cover on. That should help. Or you can take a wire brush to the threads if necessary when you want to replace it. (but I doubt that will be necessary unless you live in a seaside community) Also, it depends on what kind of car it is. A lot of the newer cars have the little short antenna on the roof. It just screws to the base finger tight, you won’t hurt anything by removing it.
